“Pine Island” are the words I typically say when people moving to Hernando ask “Where is the beach? We are right by the coast!”
Pine island isn’t as large as Clearwater, yet it has it’s charms. This 3-acre park right off of the Gulf of Mexico is, in fact, amazing to drive to. Just under 10 minutes from Cortez and US 19, the trip to the park is surreal. You are surrounded left and right by beautiful water and vegetation (and plenty of palm trees!). You will also pass a few houses and most likely think to yourself either “how do they get phone service out here” or “flood insurance must be astronomical!”, or like I would say “how lucky it is to live out here!!!”
It does cost money to park. At the time, I paid $2, but that price may vary depending upon the time of day.
Enjoy your cookouts under the pavilions, play a riveting game of volleyball, let the kiddos play at the huge playground, clean off at the showers, and enjoy the amazing sunsets!
Pine Island includes beach and swimming area, picnic tables, shelters, barbecue grills, an observation point, volleyball court, playground, concession stand, and countless seagulls.
The park isn’t large and will tend to fill up rather quickly, so get there early if you want to get a good view (like I did!)
What I liked about this park was the seclusion. There are no shops or busy streets nearby. The pavilions are really large and can hold many people.
Some people may not like that there are no shopping options nearby should you need to get something. It takes a few minutes to get back to civilization, so plan accordingly when you’re heading out this way.
Also be sure to bring swim shoes, certain areas do have rocks!
Be sure to grab a bite to eat before you head back to reality!
